SARNIA, Ontario — It was a statement week across the U Sports landscape.
From coast to coast, teams and players alike made some impressive statements as they look to build momentum ahead of the Christmas break, which is just around the corner. Some of the top contenders faced some tough challenges, and some even took a loss over the weekend which created a statement for the opposite reason.
In Ontario, each and every team in the OUA has a win after the Waterloo Warriors got on the board with a win over the York Lions. Elsewhere in the OUA, the Guelph Gryphons picked up two important home wins to get back on track after five straight games on the road. The Ryerson Rams made a bold statement with two road wins over the top two teams in the West Division to remain undefeated on the year.
Out in the AUS, the Cape Breton Capers earned a split with the New Brunswick Reds. The Capers had a chance to sweep the weekend set, but the Reds picked up a narrow 84-83 win in the second game to salvage two points. On the West Coast, the defending national champion Calgary Dinos held down home court, picking up two double-digit wins to keep their own perfect record intact.
While several teams made statements with their overall results, many players made their own statements as they played integral parts in wins for their respective programs. From double-doubles to 40-point performances, last week had its fair share of memorable stat lines.
However, five players from each conference stood out among the rest of their competitors. Those student-athletes make up this week’s edition of the Starting Five.
